Nick's News! On Display

Bolt Action

These are some photos of some Solido die cast models which have been boxed away at my parents house for many many years. I dug them out to see if I could employ them in my Bolt Action games but at 1/50th scale they sit a little too large on the table.

They are nice models and deserve to be on display and not in a box.
As ever though, it is finding shelf space........

Nick's News! On the Table

Bolt Action

I began work on squad three of my plastic US Airborne miniatures.

The squad is twelve men, same as the other two squads but it has only the one BAR

Nick's News! Quick Battle Report

Bolt Action

The pictures were taken during a battle against Rob at the North West Gaming Centre (28th August)

We played the mission: Hold Until Relieved and I was the attacker which meant my Sherman was held in reserve.

So, turn two I rolled a double six and the Sherman stayed put. Turn three I rolled double six again!
Turn four and I rolled eleven! At the end of turn four it was pretty much all over for my infantry and it would not have made any difference if the Sherman had decided to come on. Game Over!

Bolt Action

These shots were taken during a battle against Dan at the North West Gaming Centre (27th August)

The mission was 'Top Secret' in which each of us were trying to get the 'package' represented by the glass bead back to our own lines.

After my Sherman had knocked out his half track, and softened up his troops, my twelve man squad won the game by employing 'Conga Spam' tactics..... not really how I like to play.... a bit 'gamey' but it was Dan who had suggested the tactic, so that's how it ended....

Bolt Action

Arrived in the post from Warlord! A couple of blister packs of metal US Airborne troops to add to my second army of Screaming Eagles.

The first army was built using the plastic miniatures from the Assault on Normandy box set but I wanted to create a second army using only metal miniatures.

It is my plan to have four squads in two platoons. I may have to reduce squad numbers from twelve men down to ten men so that I have enough points to field some fire support.

The squads may be equipped with just three SMGs and seven Rifles because firstly, I don't have any BAR carrying metal models an secondly the two man LMG teams I received for the squads are lying in the prone position, which I am not keen on because they are static posed and so look ok in defensive set up but don't look right when advancing on the enemy, also prone models throw up questions of line of sight during a game.........

Nick's News! On the Table - Storm Talons

Warhammer 40,000

It is time to begin assembling my pair of Stormtalon flyers. They will of course escort my Stormraven into battle to form one of the few formations I can actually field in Codex: 2015

I have undercoated all the sprues black (like I normally do) and then added a basecoat spray of either blue or red. Crazy, I know but that's the way I can crack on and make quick progress on projects.

Nick's News! On the Table - US Paratroopers

Bolt Action

The second plastic squad in my 101st Airborne Division force has played in a couple of games now and so it was time to bring them to the table to add a little more paint......

I am not really too fussed about taking these models too far. They are plastic counters on the tabletop, representing certain models. I am old school and remember when lead soldiers were lead soldiers and so when my metal miniatures for Bolt Action are assembled into a playable force they are likely to receive a bit more of my attention.......

Nick's News! On the Table - Dreadnoughts

Warhammer 40,000

The old ones are here.......

This Venerable Dreadnought has been assembled and basecoated for a while......
He is magnetised for options, except for the 'standard' load out multi-melta which does not come in the kit.......they are available on eBay and Forgeworld but for now he will carry an assault cannon most of the time and switch in Lasccannon and Plasma Cannon if required........

This Ironclad Dreadnought has a similar story........all arm options magnatised.....other options glued.

Another quick visit to the painting table, an application of my standard technique, and these old boys are ready for battle.....

They were both going to be ancient vets of the mighty Fifth Company..........

but I think that the as-yet-unnamed Venerable Dreadnought would be better considered as a First Company Hero on detachment to the Fifth Company to lead the other two regular dreads and the Ironclad Dreadnought might be on detachment from the Ninth Company to provide fire support along with or instead of the Centurion Devastators seen in a recent post.....

Nick's News! On the Table - Terminators

Warhammer 40,000

First Company squad to be attached to the mighty Fifth Company.

This squad of six terminators I have had for a while. One of them (with a slightly different storm bolter) is the Free one I received attached to a copy of White Dwarf several years ago.

A quick going over with my standard technique and these veteran warriors are battle ready.......

Nick's News! On the Table - Centurions

Warhammer 40,000

Devastating firepower! When I bought the Centurion Devastators they were going to be (a part of) the tenth squad of the fifth company of the Eagle Marines.

However, the release of the new devastators box set has caused a re-think.

The squad of six miniatures are now attached to the Fifth Company - on loan - from the Ninth Company. No decals or markings applied yet so I am not certain which squad they are from.

They are however finished to a battle ready stage and can take to the field as soon as an opportunity arrives......
